THE BLACK CINEMA SERIES TO CELEBRATE HARRY BELAFONTE , LEGENDARY ENTERTAINER AND ACTIVIST, IN JUNE WITH A SPECIAL FILM TRIBUTE
The Black Cinema Series, a partnership between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists and the Little Theatre, presents the classic western film “Buck and the Preacher” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (June 22) at the Little Theatre , 240 East Avenue in the End District of Rochester, New York.
This special screening is a tribute to Harry Belafonte — actor, singer and activist — who passed away in April and has a prominent role in the film which was produced in part through his company Belafonte Enterprises. Sidney Poitier, his longtime friend, made his directorial debut and also helped produce the film.
Following the end of the Civil War, soldier-turned-trail-guide Buck (Sidney Poitier) makes a living by helping former slaves find settlements in the West. Along the way, a con artist, the Preacher (Harry Belafonte), joins the group, and constantly clashes with Buck. But when a gang of bounty hunters, led by the fiendish Deshay (Cameron Mitchell), attempts to round up the freed slaves to bring them back to Louisiana, the two put aside their differences to fight a common enemy.
Following “Buck and the Preacher,” there is a post-screening panel discussion. As always audience questions are welcome and encouraged.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the film starts at 7:30 p.m. The Little Café hours are 5 to 9:30 p.m. that evening. General admission, $11 ; senior, student, and military, $7. Little Member admission, $7. Little Members, students, and military are required to show their membership or ID at the door to receive discounted ticket.
Tickets available online in advance or at the box office day of the screening. Online sales close 30 minutes prior to showtime. Group prices are available in advance through the business office (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays). The Little Theatre is located at 240 East Avenue in the East End District of Rochester, NY.
