“SING SING” CELEBRATES RESILENCE AND THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF ART
The Black Cinema Series, a partnership between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists (RABJ) and the Little Theatre, presents “SING SING” on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:00 p.m. The screening will take place at The Little (Theater 5) at 8 Winthrop St., off East Avenue. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
About The Film:
The film is based on the true story of the nonprofit program Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) at Sing Sing prison. Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo plays Divine G (John Devine G. Whitfield, a founding member of RTA), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit. He finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. This stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, stars an unforgettable cast of formerly incarcerated actors
Following the film, there will be a Post-Screening Panel Discussion.
The Panelists will be:
*MIQUEL POWELL | Executive Director and Founder of The Reentry & Community Development Center, Inc. (RCDC-17) which is committed to working with those who are recently released from jail or prison, and those struggling with substance abuse disorders.
In addition, Powell is a NYS certified substance abuse counselor at a local non-profit agency.
*SHANIQUE BYRD | Publisher and Editor of Tocsin, with a focus on providing a voice for marginalized communities and incarcerated individuals. Tocsin is dedicated to promoting social justice and combating racism through various platforms such as their magazine, podcast and community reporting.
Tickets for the event are available for purchase in advance online, at the box office during open hours, or at the door the day of the screening.
General Admission price is $11 with a discounted rate of $7 for seniors, students and military personnel. Group prices are available in advance through the business office.
