Flanking Mount Hope Avenue are streets chock full of great minds studying and working at the University of Rochester and its renowned University Medical Center, which includes Strong Hospital, the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and more. Mixed in with the students are many long-time residents who enjoy the choices accessible in the neighborhood: the wide variety of stores, services, and eateries on Mount Hope Avenue. Mount Hope is now home to two of the city largest development projects – Collegetown and CityGate, adding numerous businesses and residential opportunities to the neighborhood.

In addition to the proximity of the University of Rochester and Strong Hospital campus, residents enjoy easy access to beautiful Genesee Valley Park and all its recreational options, and to Mount Hope Cemetery, a place of beauty and fascinating history; both Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony are buried there.

The residential areas of the neighborhood with their varied architectural styles form a pleasant area for walking, and there is easy access to the Erie Canalway Trail at the southern part of the neighborhood for jogging, biking, roller-blading or just going for a walk.

The historic Genesee Valley Park is adjacent to the neighborhood to the west. Starting in 1888, the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted began designing Genesee Valley Park, with its sports fields, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pool and ice rink. This 800-acre park is located at the confluence of the Genesee River and the Erie Canal and has canoe livery and boathouse. In the other direction, residents can wander through Highland Park, although it is most popular in the spring when the hundreds of lilacs bloom.

Neighborhoods are living breathing entities, which can change over time. Although we have tried to capture the essence of this area, the Coalition will be reviewing information twice a year to determine if any updates should be made. If you have suggestions for an update, please contact us and we will consider it at the next review.
